;) | BERMUDA postal history 1898 cover to Mrs. Alexander Smith, "Durnford", St. Georges with pair QV ½d deep grey-green pmk'd BAILEY'S BAY B/JU 6 1898 with St. Georges C/JU 6 1898 backstamp. Durnford House (36 Wellington Street, St. George) was built in 1795 by Mayor Andrew Durnford as his residence; he was the first mayor of St. George and came to Bermuda to look after the construction work of the forts in St. George's. It is said that a part of the fund allocated for forts were diverted to build this house, and it was called 'The Fifth Fort' by some of his enemies. Durnford did not live long enough to enjoy the grounds and views of the town and harbour as he died September 11th 1798 and was buried in the grounds. £60 |

Although it is now eight months since the late rebellion we have not received any compensation. I am very much afraid there will be another row with the natives, if there is it will be a big affair. The native unrest is all owing to having incompetent men in charge of affairs. The natives have lost all faith in the Colonial Gov’t. I feel convinced that if the Colony were to revert to a Crown Colony (the only thing that will save Natal from utter ruin) the natives would be quite peaceful and contented. Natal is not fit financially or otherwise to have Self Gov’t. A rare example of anonymous poison-pen mail addressed Henry Smythe, 10 West Queen Street, (Kingston) on reverse QV ½d red-brown Post Card mailed at Kingston ID/ MY 18 91. Best full transcript reads Henry Smith mother is Eliza Doby the leader in Wesley Chapel, and George Smythe the parson. Why you don’t go back to St. Anns or christen after your father Smythe? Why you was shipped off to sea? and now you rob money in Colon you can’t go back? Pay Col. Morrice & Co for the goods you trust so long you damn thief. Show this to your friends. I can prove it, bring me up, you are a nasty bastard licentiously got, I know you well in St. Anns as a ragged boy. Face with Advertised and Unclaimed handstamps plus four Returned Letter Branch dated 17 JU 91. Reverse also shows m/script postal endorsements of “Not known” (twice with dates) and “No name”. ;) | PUNTA GORDA, stated to be from Mitchell Hedges (regarded by many as the real "Indiana Jones") 1926 cover to Sydenham, England with KGV 2c pair tied PUNTA GORDA AP 24 26, marked at base in ink "From Mitchell Hedges, the explorer", opening fault top right corner. Michael Hedges (1882-1959) is best noted for having discovered what is termed "The Crystal Skull of Doom" at the Maya ruins of Lubaantun in 1927. In 2008 Paramount Pictures released the film "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull". £80 |

Things here seem going from bad to worse and there is no saying what the end of the Asiatic affair will be. Canon Ogden, St. Paul's Rectory, Calliaqua, St. Vincent with Federation trio pmk'd BELVIDERE */AP 22 58 cds, reverse top flap mostly missing, b/stamped CARRIACOU AP 28 58 (poor), GPO Grenada */AP 29 58, and poor CALLIAQUA */3 MY 58 cds. BELVIDERE should not be confused with BELVEDERE, the infamous mainland estate where Julien Fedon planned his rebellion (March 2, 1795 - June 19, 1796, also known as the Brigand's War) by converting his Belvedere coffee and cocoa plantation into a fortified headquarters for his army. The estate was near the top of a very steep mountain, and almost inaccessible, after the failure of one of the many unsuccessful British attacks Fedon ordered the death of 40 white hostages. £85 |

There are strong links between the Perot's of British Guiana and Bermuda. Covers from Demerara (1859) and Berbice (1872) are known to William H. Perot, Baltimore, son of the famous William Bennett Perot of Bermuda. Two 1833 entires from Demerara to Philadelphia have manuscript endorsement “Hamilton, Bermuda. Forwarded by Your Most Ob Servant Wm. B. Perot” whilst working as a forwarding agent during the period before he was appointed Postmaster of Bermuda by warrant dated SP 6 1836. £120 |

Shipping Dept., Belize City. The “Juanito” hauled a thousand logs at a time from Orange Walk to the Belize Estate Company sawmills and lumber yards in Belize City. They intend going down 200 ft and if the reef is as good at that depth as it is at the surface they will float at once. The Poll Tax here has caused great dissatisfaction among all classes. The natives here have refused to pay. There may be trouble when the tax is collected (or tried to be collected rather). The natives have lost all confidence in the Govt which is rotten. Getting ready for a prospecting trip. Pegging off is the order of the day now in Zululand. George Osborn, Wesleyan Mission House, London rated 1/- with 17 NO arrival backstamp. In late September 1852 there was an outbreak of cholera in the Bahamas in which over a 1,000 persons died within a period of five months. The Daily Atlas described “Vessels in the harbour being crowded with people fleeing the scourge”. Also on NO 17 1852 the RMSP "La Plata" arrived Southampton “under melancholy circumstances” – nine dead on board and 21 taken ill during the voyage from the West Indies (Pratique 6/02). £175 |

William Fawcett was the Director of Public Gardens and Plantations in Jamaica from 1887 to 1908, and having returned to Britain was the co-author of the first volumes of Flora of Jamaica. £180 |

LUCIA historical interest) 1786 entire headed "Jamaica 12th November 1786" from newly arrived James Grant Forbes to his father Lieut. General James Grant in London rated 1/- with "IAMAICA" and JANUARY/M/22 experimental Bishop mark on lower flap. Major General James Grant was born at Ballindoch, Banffshire in 1720. By 1757 he was a major fighting in the French & Indian Wars and captured at Fort Duquesne. Fought at the Siege of Havana, made Governor of East Florida. Served in the American War of Independence, was General William Howe's primary planning officer, led a division at the Battle of Long Island. In 1778 he led an expeditionary force to capture the French island of St. Lucia with its surrender at the Battle of La Vigie. Died 1806. £200 |
