QV 6d quadruple rate intended for carriage as loose mail as far as St. Thomas as marked From St. Thomas but on arrival pen-endorsed Found Open in L(oose) Bag, docketted Paine 1859 and adhesives cancelled 44 in diamond on arrival London Foreign Branch. This wax-surfaced linen type cover attracting peripheral grime and repelling ink on all three transit and receiving datestamps.

with part contents and docketted Nassau 2 Feb 1848 landed New Orleans FEB 22 by private ship and rated 12(c).

Eliza 28/1/99
in manuscript on QV 1d (SG.44).
Research by Michael Rego suggests this cancel perhaps applied to mail written or placed on board the contempory barque Eliza of the Newport & South Wales Shipping Company which made regular trips from South Wales to St. Lucia dropping off cargoes of coal at the quayside in Castries. (The Empire 1d rate introduced DE 25 1898).
