1817 Berbice RATE BY WEIGHT entire
(an alternative way to calculate postage for heavy letters when it was impractical to count number of pages) showing BERBICE/Dec 29. 1817 (top line 25 x 3½mm, lower line 31 x 3½mm) on outer wrapper (contents removed) to Dumfries, North Britain marked 1¼oz and courtesy prepaid 12/1 in red ink. Some soiling, prepayment rarely seen at this period due possible risk of loss at sea. Rarely seen as such.
Single Sheet rate 1/2d packet plus 1/3d inland postage (5 x 2/5d = 12/1d). The Act of 1711 defined that a Single Letter was a sheet of paper weighing under one ounce. Should there be an enclosure, no matter how small, it was a Double Letter and a Treble Letter was a letter of more than two sheets weighing less than one ounce. An ounce Letter was considered equal to four Single Letters.
