THE MALTA "M" OBLITERATOR PERIOD 1857-1850, mainly illustrated 250 covers. Price £80
(WIP-149) The most astute collector will be wondering whether any "M" obliterator REGISTERED mail exists. Year 1857 (September) illustrates earliest known use plus covers to Shanghai, China and Danzig, Prussia; 1858 offers a 4-colour franking, a 1d Soldier's letter to New South Wales, 9 chisel slits on one cover, and 10 stamps on another cover, 1859 (February) illustrates the latest known used abroad franking, and 1860 shows off the wonderful QV ½d orange internal use covers Of the 250 covers listed 234 are shown in part or full b/w or colour, provenance is attributed where known. MALTA QV ½d (DE 13 1860 - MR 14 1885), 243 mainly ILLUSTRATED covers. Price £120
(WIP-152) Where else will you be able to scroll down and see the dates and known provenance of 243 covers, of which 212 are illustrated in part or full b/w or colour. Initially cancelled with the "M" obliterator, then the MALTA cds, and finally the "A25" duplex first in horizontal format, later changed vertical format. As this adhesive was only intended for local use single, double, treble, quadruple, quintuple rates will be found, and rare 1869 unauthorised incoming used abroad from London to Siggieui, and outgoing 1872 unauthorised to Genoa, Italy, and 1880 to Aberdeenshire, Scotland. You can now order and pay for your own DIGITAL pdf copy (no refunds) but two free updates as and when requested, which can be usefully carried to Stamp Fairs or Auctions on your tablet or laptop. No firm attempt has been made to identify by colour, or shades of colour/printings. The emphasis has been to identify the covers by date, and allocate provenance. (WIP-253) Scans of his collection on 27 pages showing 559 pieces (multiples counted as one piece) available by digital pdf (no refunds). This life time collection shows availability on differing denominations QV, KE7, KGV "loose" stamps with earliest and latest dates in places, AM and PM codes, plus the quality of strikes one might expect etc. A real rarity guide allowing the Birkett Allan provenance for every item. 1872 cover front to New York City, USA with QV 6d Plate 11 pmk'd A/MALTA/JU 13 72 "A25" duplex with superb 2-line "PAID-ONLY/TO ENGLAND" showing the "5(d)" shortfall for 11d rate in black, red London Paid JU 24 72 (crossed out by 5 black lines) transit.

Proofed/unrecorded ERRONEOUSLY APPLIED unique TRINCOMALEE/RETURNED FOR POSTAGE,CEYLON postal history
1845 wrapper from C. Brun fils, Port Louis pmk'd red MAURITIUS POST OFFICE d/ring dated NO 05 1845 marked "via Ceylon" to Veillon Freres, Bordeaux, France with "Paid 1/8" in dark black ink most unusually landed on Ceylon's north east coast (instead of the southern port of Galle) showing prepared for application TRINCOMALEE/RETURNED FOR POSTAGE datestamp for NO 22 1845 erroneously applied, crossed through, and TRINCOMALEE/STEAMER LETTER added for the next day in the same coloured ink. Carried via ALEXANDRIA (JA 7 1846) with 25mm chisels slits and large part PURIFIE AU LAZERET/MALTE handstamp added showing red PAQ. ANG. MARSEILLES (16 JANV 46) on address panel and Bordeaux (10 JANV 46) arrival backstamp with 96 decimes to be collected. Exhibition item collecting cancellations from five different countries.
Similar RETURNED FOR POSTAGE datestamps were proofed for other Ceylon towns but none are known used. This remarkable example only exists due being wrongly applied.

GREAT BRITAIN USED TWO DIFFERENT COUNTRIES, Malta postal history
1861 mourning cover to Lt. Colonel Duncan Munro Bethune (1816-1870), 1st Battalion. 9th Regiment, Vernon House, Farnham, Surrey with GB 6d pmk'd "A25" duplex dated A/MALTA/JA 23 61, backstamped Farnham JA 23 61 arrival and forwarded to London with GB QV 1d red pmk'd "292" numeral on JA 25 61 with London transits.
Such GB combination covers are seldom found and extremely rare, and do not exist for most countries and agencies that were supplied with GB stamps.
