Johnson PhD, Chester Vale, Gordon Town, Jamaica variously forwarded with twelve differing backstamps including purple boxed TITCHFIELD (TRD 11) for both 16.4.03 and 17.4.03 (showing movement of "J" under "TC"), cover with corner fault. William Fawcett was the Director of Public Gardens and Plantations in Jamaica from 1887 to 1908, and having returned to Britain was the co-author of the first volumes of Flora of Jamaica. £180 |
;) ;) | The GHOSTS of POINT ELLICE HOUSE, the most haunted house on VANCOUVER ISLAND 1898 cover to Mrs (Caroline Agnes) O'Reilly (1831-1899, thought to appear as an apparition in the grounds of her house) at Point Ellice, Victoria, Vancouver Island pmk'd KINGSTON AU 10 98 and then mysteriously spirited some 4,432 miles to DUBLIN (AU 24 98, husband Peter originated from Ballybeg, Co. Meath, only 45 miles from Dublin) before travelling a further 4,502 miles to VICTORIA, B.C. PM/SP 6 98 per b/stamp) with I/SP 7 98 and "10" cents tax due handstamp added the next day, some soiling. Husband Peter, former Indian Reserve Commissioner, is the subject of supernatural investigations at the house which went live on a YouTube video October 31 2020. Visitors and volunteers have had spooky encounters with lights switching on and off, a piano playing on its own, and apparitions chasing them away. In later years "a nice young lady in a blue dress" had shown visitors around the house giving many previously unknown facts, when questioned they went back inside the house and pointed to a blue gown lying across a bed, "that's the one she was wearing" in daughter Kathleen O'Reilly's bedroom. Kathleen had returned! For many years the whereabouts of the grave of Caroline Agnes was a mystery, but in her final year, being so ill, she made a last visit to her family in England, dying only a few days after arrival. Her remains lie in the cemetery at Cheriton, Folkestone (only 2.1 miles down the road, a 39 minute walk, from me!). £475 |

Baker, Hotel Tourraine, Boston, Massachusetts posted with QV 2½d Keyplate pmk'd Port Antonio DEC 18 01. This letter from Joshua on Capt. Lorenzo Dow Baker letterhead to Mrs. L.D. Baker would infer that this is from a second son. The letter mentions dear old Bowden, having a vaccination which did not take, and children Edith and little Dow. £225 |

LUCIA historical interest) 1786 entire headed "Jamaica 12th November 1786" from newly arrived James Grant Forbes to his father Lieut. General James Grant in London rated 1/- with "IAMAICA" and JANUARY/M/22 experimental Bishop mark on lower flap. Major General James Grant was born at Ballindoch, Banffshire in 1720. By 1757 he was a major fighting in the French & Indian Wars and captured at Fort Duquesne. Fought at the Siege of Havana, made Governor of East Florida. Served in the American War of Independence, was General William Howe's primary planning officer, led a division at the Battle of Long Island. In 1778 he led an expeditionary force to capture the French island of St. Lucia with its surrender at the Battle of La Vigie. Died 1806. £200 |

A rare example of anonymous poison-pen mail addressed Henry Smythe, 10 West Queen Street, (Kingston) on reverse QV ½d red-brown Post Card mailed at Kingston ID/ MY 18 91. Best full transcript reads Henry Smith mother is Eliza Doby the leader in Wesley Chapel, and George Smythe the parson. Why you don’t go back to St. Anns or christen after your father Smythe? Why you was shipped off to sea? and now you rob money in Colon you can’t go back? Pay Col. Morrice & Co for the goods you trust so long you damn thief. Show this to your friends. I can prove it, bring me up, you are a nasty bastard licentiously got, I know you well in St. Anns as a ragged boy. Face with Advertised and Unclaimed handstamps plus four Returned Letter Branch dated 17 JU 91. Reverse also shows m/script postal endorsements of “Not known” (twice with dates) and “No name”.
