ORANGE RIVER COLONY stamps: newly discovered 1890 CGH ½d green ovp'd "ORANGE RIVER COLONY" assumed OFFICIALLY DEFACED by G.P.O. on unused without gum horiz. pair (SG.133var), colour more bluish-green than normal. The Jamaica 1890 QV TWO PENCE HALF-PENNY on 4d red-brown is found similarly OFFICIALLY DEFACED Ex Winter, and described in the Swarbrick Sale (Cavendish 29 Sep 1995) as "thought only one pane was produced with this variety due to inking problems. They were returned to the G.P.O. for destruction but it is believed ten pairs exist. One pair is in the Royal Collection". £625

BETHANY (STATION excised) R.O., Orange River Colony the tall letters cds (Putzel unlisted) dated SP 4 (00) on ½d Brief Kaart uprated with ½d for Germany, b/stamped Bloemfontein SP 4 19(00). The BETHANY STATION R.O. sighting was taken from the Batten collection (still intact) where only the "S" was visible but a full strike on loose stamp shows it to be BETHANY SIDING R.O. The correction will appear in the Putzel addendum £325
