WAR OF 1812 with EXTREMELY RARE MONTH FIRST TORTOLA 2-LINE (only recorded example): 1814 entire dated "Tortola Feby 14th 1814" from John Strachan with copy of Wm H Thompson letter of "25 Jany 1814" to Thomas Walters , Kendal, Westmoreland rated 2/4 changed 4/8 showing strongly struck TORTOLA/FEB 15 14 despatch, reverse marked ""Recd March 29th 1814", some internal stains from tape strengthening. Ex SYDNEY RAINE and FREDRICK. (War broke out between Britain and the USA JU 18 1812 and by 1813 the Caribbean was swarmed by American privateers. War concluded by Treaty of Ghent DE 24 1814)
Contents mention "with respect to Mr. J. Carruthers he was taken by an American Privateer and carried to the Havannah where he was as a prisoner for sixteen weeks and afterwards he got safe to Bermuda. Captain Clark arrived him about a fortnight ago and I am sorry to inform you he is very unwell" and "I now must inform you that I had a very difficult job, that of taking off a Sloop which got on Shore at Sea Cow Bay, and had to repair her for which I got 400".
