BRITISH GUIANA compulsory payment of postage on returned unpaid letter
1850 printed Bank of Scotland Office letter headed Edinburgh 9 Jan 1850 to David Bridges, Demerara rated 1/- unpaid with on reverse rare combination both BERBICE MY 17 1850 and DEMERARA JY 4 1850 dbl-arcs. Address panel with red crayon "Not called for" and partially legible red surmounted by Crown handstamp reading "The Party to whom this letter/is Addressed has not Called for it/3 AU 1850" applied London on return. No example of this handstamp is recorded on any other letter addressed to the British West Indies.
Only one other entire is known with combination BERBICE (MY 4 1850) and DEMERARA (MY 5 1850) dbl-arcs, and is addressed to Antigua. David Bridges was a surgeon living at Riverstown, Essequibo and died MR 22 1859. Explanation of very rare use of this London Returned Mail dated handstamp accompanies the Gibraltar scan (enclosed for buyer) below.

PAID AT ENGLISH HARBOR, ANTIGUA Crowned Circle
a completely fabricated wrapper (produced circa 1950) on brown parchment-like outer lettersheet addressed J. Lea Esq, Solicitor, Nevis with “Pd” lower left corner showing very fine red ink PAID AT ENGLISH HARBOR Crowned Circle plus very fine black ink ENGLISH HARBOR, ANTIGUA datestamp for JY 1 19 (19 for 61) and purplish ink “4” inter-island rate mark above address panel. Lower flap with trace of NEVIS arrival dbl-arc and some circular stains which are the base of a candle holder which has been cunninglyly blown out to spatter tiny flecks of red wax, also some minor soiling added by use of a paint brush dipped in water. Only two genuine entires with this Crowned Circle (Cat.£9,000) are recorded.

Rare LAST KNOWN USE BAHAMAS str. line (B1) - in RED INK for PREPAID MAIL
1846 cover with red BAHAMAS str. line (B1) marked “Prepaid” and rated red “4” to Edward Lawless Asst. Surgeon, H.M.S. Vesuvius, Port Royal, Jamaica with Kingston FE 2 1846 dbl-arc on reverse. No despatch date but expected to be JA 13 1846, overall soiling. Rare as only 6 examples currently known. Ludington (Page 206) records the earliest known pre-paid cover from Bahamas as c1842 with red strike BAHAMAS (B2) to New Orleans marked “Pd” and rated red 18/-. No examples of the NASSAU-NEW PROVIDENCE dbl-arc (used SP 3 1842 to JY 12 1846) are known on pre-paid mail and the BAHAMAS (B1) in red ink was used exclusively on prepaid mail period 1844-1846. The six known examples are dated MR 10 1844, MR 14 1844, JA 31 1845, MY – 1845, SP – 1845, and JA (13) 1846 (this currently being the last known recorded use of any Bahamas str. line cancel). The PAID AT BAHAMAS crowned circle was registered at the GPO, London on MY 22 1846.
